Much of the look of Dead By Sunset revolved around the killer, Brad Cunningham. Portrayed by Twentysomething's Ken Olin, Cunningham was perceived by many as a loving, caring husband and father. Only those who were very close to him knew the truth.

The makeup for the character was designed to 'lead' the audience down this same path. During the first 1/3 of the movie, Olin's makeup was clean and simple. As the character of Cunningham becomes more and more erratic in his behavior, subtle changes in the skin tone and texture, as well as simulated fatigue under eyes and around the nose and mouth contributed to the transition of the character. Redness around the eyes and inner lids was accentuated and whenever possible within the storyline, one or two days beard growth was applied by 'blowing' human hair to created a beardline. During the most intense scenes, irritants were used to heighten the redness of the eyes even further. Ken Olin was always a dream to work with and delighted in creating a character against his type.



Lindsay Frost, who played Sara, a doctor who becomes the second wife to Brad Cunningham, was seen in several hospital situations. Various trauma makeups were created for the patients including 'spousal abuse,' 'chainsaw accident' and simulations for various operations.

"This was my first film with Annette O'Toole. She is an amazing performer and a truly wonderful human being!

Our first day of work together was rather unique. She wasn't supposed to be pretty, or even normal in appearance..., the first scenes with her were in the morgue when her character was dead!"
