Spinning a Tale!

E. Larry Day was the Key Make-up Artist for "Dr. Giggles," shot in Portland, Oregon. The effects team for the film was KNB Effects. KNB is one of the best-known effects companies in Hollywood.

Greg Nicotero (the 'N' in KNB) and Gino Crognale were the 'on-set guys' for the filming. Greg is a legend among horror film fans and the opportunity to work with him was a thrill.

Aside from the work of KNB, the makeup was pretty straight forward. Larry Drake played Evan Rendall, "Dr. Giggles." Larry is best known for the role of Bennie on "L.A. Law." One of the challenges in his makeup design was to create a more sinister look to the familiar face of Bennie. Subtle changes in the brows, eyes and mouth accentuated the characterization that Larry created.

By far the best tale from the filming of "Dr. Giggles" story concerns the night of the carnival. Working at Portland's Oak Park Amusement Center for two nights required many teenage extras. The extras that were recruited were promised a little money and the opportunity to 'ride-the-rides for free' to their hearts content. What teen wouldn't jump at the chance!

All was went well until after our lunch break. Nobody had given thought to what would happen to 20 or so teenagers with full-bellies 'forced' to ride the octopus for 30-40 minutes straight without a break!

The amazing thing about projectile vomiting on a fast-spinning object is the amount of spray. Several times during the night a shout would go out and everyone would have to take cover as another youth strafed the crowd. Every so often, the whole production would shut down while workers 'hosed-out' the rides.

Just another example of the 'fun' world of filmmaking!
