Lettering on Fabric

• “Calligraphy for Quilters” An introduction to tools and alphabets for lettering on fabric.
• Alternate class names: “The A to Z of Lettering on Fabric” “Words on Quilts”

• “Traditional Talking Quilts” An overview of historic quilts which include the written word.
• Including contemporary applications.

•  “In the 19^th Century Style” lettering with India ink and a quill and reproduce this look with modern PIGMA pens. Calligraphy experience helpful.

•  “Direct Brush Lettering” Neuland, Blackletter and Bones. Calligraphy experience necessary. NEW!

• “Stitched, Stamped or Stenciled Letters” Add quilted, appliquéd, trapunto and pieced letters to your quilt. Use commercial or handmade stamps and stencils to get a traditional or contemporary look.  NEW!

• “Three Easy Alphabets” for lettering on fabric: Roman, Copperplate and Uncial, with edged and pointed pens. NEW!

Lectures present an overview of the tools, techniques and a historical perspective of each group of lettering. Slides and/or samples illustrate the topic.

Workshops include samples, instructor demos and hands-on experimentation with the tools and techniques. Lettering produced in class supply pages for a finished sample book.

Indispensable Indigo – the Deepest of Blue

• “Denim Delights” Paper-piecing – an easier way to handle denim. Kit includes patterns and enough fabric for class projects. Create denim blocs for a wall hanging, a vest or potholder.

• “What Is So Special About Indigo Blue?”  The history, production and application of indigo fabrics. Textile samples include both international fabrics and American quilts and blocks.

• “Classic blue and white quilts” – An historic overview helps you choose a traditional pattern for your own classic quilt. Plan a traditional layout and complete one block. Kit includes more enough indigo fabrics for the block. Complete a throw sized quilt top in a class series. NEW.

Lectures include many slides and/or samples of the topic.
