A Softservian Evening at Virgil's:

Where We Met

Precisely one year after meeting at Mantle's, Mr. Kohlreiter drove my wife and me into the heart of Manhattan to meet with F.X. Flinn, Carianne, David Nugent, Jonathan Jacobs and son Andrew, dan sonnenberg, and Charlie Rubin. On the way from the parking garage to Virgil's we noticed that Kevin Meaney was appearing that very night at Caroline's. An ocean of early New Year's Eve revelers swept us south along Broadway, but we managed to veer left against the current when it was necessary. Once we were able to get out of the frigid night into the bar at Virgil's we all huddled like sardines for the better part of an hour. Charlie warned some of us to order anything but the famous ribs, and many of us opted for brisket, an offering where Jewish and Texas cuisines meet. We couldn't secure a round table upstairs, so we played musical chairs in order for all of us to spend time with one another. On the way back to Kohly's house we learned that Syracuse had won its bowl game against Kentucky and that Texas, of all places, had signed Kenny Rogers for an absurd sum. Our get together was warm and memorable. My hope this year is that Mrs. Kagey and I make it to NYC during the summer for a game or two or three at THTRB.
