A very small bunny announces that it would like to go faraway places & do adventurous things, & decides it will need to change itself into many different beings and objects, to be able to get away. The mother rabbit knows she will need to stay nearby to be sure the little bunny is safe. Clement Hurd's illustrations are colorful, wistful, & dramatic.
It is late at night and a very little bunny gradually gets ready to go to sleep by saying goodnight to all the familiar objects in the house and room, as well as to distant things in the world outside. As all of these things are named and pictured, in the light of the lamp-lit room with the moon shining through the window, the bunny gets sleepier and sleepier.
