HOLES
by Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats, a somewhat hapless but sympathetic kid, is mistakenly charged with theft & sent to to "Camp Green Lake" for juvenile delinquent rehabilitation. After long & tedious travel into a forsaken desert, it becomes clear that this camp & its lake are not what Stanley expected. Neither are the camp "activities" -- most of which involve the young, unhappy inmates laboring for hours each day in the sweltering heat, digging huge & seemingly purposeless deep holes in the parched & bone-dry lake bed. As time goes by, the nasty nature & hidden motives of a number of authoritative characters become apparent, & Stanley bravely carries out difficult feats & devises clever strategies get the truth revealed. This story is told in fairly simple language but is very readable, engrossing & emotionally intense. The plot is often bleak, with drastic turns of events, has a vivid resolution & a satisfying ending.
