The Guest

Story & Pictures by James Marshall

Mona, a moose, is practicing the piano when she feels a shiver along her spine. She thinks she must be getting the flu ... but soon discovers that a little snail is creeping her back. Maurice, the snail (who is visiting from France) becomes one of Mona's dearest friends. This is a lovely story full of mystery, sadness, coziness, & hilarity -- with delightful characters & perfect pictures.

One of the greatest children's book authors & artists, James Marshall wrote & illustrated dozens of children's books, including the charming George & Martha stories about two hippopotamus best friends. Pretending to be his own cousin ("Edward Marshall") he also wrote the funny series of easy-to-read books about the almost-teenaged Fox & his little sister, Louise. James Marshall collaborated with Harry Allard (his college French teacher) on the very silly stories about The Stupids, & popular books about the teacher, sweet Miss Nelson, & the vile Viola Swamp. He also cheerily retold & illustrated quite a few traditional fairy tales, transforming their somewhat-dire story lines with his happy style full of friendliness & mischief.

A Friend for Dragon: Dragon's First Tale

A snake in the grass overhears him and plays a trick on Dragon, making him think that an apple lying on the ground has agreed to be his friend. The Apple is a very quiet pal & somewhat puzzling, but Dragon is still a very kind & considerate buddy. An alarming turn of events brings sorrow to Dragon's life, but things turn out better in the end.

Story and pictures by Arnold Lobel

These are five stories about round, sweet, funny Owl - who lives alone & putters about in his cozy home: He carries a little candle to fill his rooms with glowing light. He sits by the fire in the evening & has a bowl of nice pea soup. He makes friends with the moon and welcomes it to be his guest. He thinks of things that make him sad -- & cries, then makes a pot of tea from his salty tears. And sees two strange bumps at the end of his bed, which make him very scared ... until he figures out what they really are.

Humphrey Hits The Jackpot

by Graham Oakley

This is (I think) the most recent book by Graham Oakley about Sampson the Cat & the Church Mice. Rollicking stories with sly or silly humor & great pictures of dozens of tiny mice full of antics devising plans & getting into fantasic scrapes -- from which the long-suffering Sampson (a cat who has taken a vow to never harm mice) has to find a way to rescue them.

Most of the Sampson & Churchmice books are out of print, it seems ... but I hope you still can buy them used, or find them in the Library.
