While walking home through the woods, Sylvester sees a lion and, with very little time to think, he uses the pebble to wish himself to safety -- baffling the lion in the process, but involving himself in an even more drastic predicament. Sylvester's hasty wish has made him unable to use the pebble again, unable to go home, unable do anything! Sylvester's parents, who do not know what has happened to their precious son, search for him everywhere, with aching hearts. At last, through a lucky coincidence, the pebble is able to work more magic, reuniting Sylvester and his parents and returning them to their happy life.

Much later, when Amos is back on land, he hears that a whale is stranded on a nearby beach. He goes to look & finds Boris lying in the sand, unable to shift himself or get back into the water. The dedicated Amos soon figures out a way to save his friend & helps him return to the safety of his ocean life.

Caleb & Kate, a married couple, who love each other ("but not every single minute"!) have an argument, & Caleb stalks off into the woods. He stops to rest & think, but falls asleep, & is discovered by a witch. The witch has been learning some new spells & decides to try one out on the snoozing Caleb, turning him into a snoozing dog. As the night grows late, & the days go by, Kate is more & more worried & heartbroken that her husband has not returned. She does have company, however. A mysterious stray dog has come to live with her. It almost seems to try to talk to her and is very loyal, which makes her feel less lonely & a bit more comforted. One night, the house is invaded by robbers & the dog's heroic efforts bring about a surprising turn that restores their happiness.
Farmer Palmer, a pig, sets off to market, with his hired donkey, Ebenezer, who faithfully pulls the cart. An accidental misstep injures Ebenezer's leg, causing him too much pain to walk. They are miles away from home, & know that Farmer Palmer's wife & children will be worried if they don't get back before dark. They decide that Ebenezer should ride in the cart while Farmer Palmer pulls it. This is a new experience for farmer Palmer. Ebenezer, although in pain, enjoys the ride & offers Farmer Palmer understanding & encouragement. They encounter numerous hazards on their journey, but become better friends, and their arrival home a little late, is even more joyful because of this.

One pleasant summer day, two mice named Abel and Amanda are on a picnic in the woods when the weather changes and a wild storm overtakes them. They seek shelter in a cave, but the wind snatches up Amanda's scarf and carries it off. Abel tries to retrieve it, but is swept away by a river and gets stranded on an island. At first (since his famiy is well-known in society), he expects to be rescued right away. But, as time goes by with no sign of outside help, he realizes he will need to learn to fend for himself. He uses a hollow log for shelter, eats an odd assortment of seeds and berries, builds boats & bridges & contraptions, & becomes more at home in the natural world. He then decides to use his imagination and energy to try to get off the island, back to his home & favorite things... and to be with Amanda again, since he misses her very much.
