Revision of Bylaws and Constitution during April 1st meeting

The Club's Bylaws and constitution have not been reviewed or revised for a long time and are somewhat out-of-date with our practices. We will consider updating and revising the Club's bylaws and practices during the April 1st meeting.  Look over the documents and bring suggestions for improvement to the next meeting.

Don't forget to renew your membership in 2010

Help support the club by renewing your club and AMA membership again this year.

Next Club meeting is Thursday April 1st - Starts at 7:00 PM in the Eagles Lodge

We moved the meeting location to the Eagles Lodge on Stillwell Ave across from the Tillamook library. map  Everyone is invited.  Come join in the discussions and hang out with RC enthusiasts for an hour or so. You can bring a model or project to share with the club.   (more)

Saturday - Free lessons, free trial flights

Curious about RC flying and want to give it a try? Come to the airfield any calm-weather Saturday for some free flight lessons. We will provide a plane, radio and a copilot for your first few flights. Get a hold of Gary, Stuart or Bob at the airfield 9:00AM to 11:00 or phone for other times.

Field leveling
The parking area is still mostly dirt but it was recently seeded with grass.  We will have to stay off of it for awhile so park on the grass next to the flight tables.  Please don't park in the hay field until later in the summer, after it is cut.  The middle of the airfield is partly dirt because Rob is filling in the low spots.  It will be graded and seeded with grass
and with the warming weather will be as good as new soon.

Mowing help needed
We need to mow about every week in fall/winter and sometimes twice a week in spring/summer to keep the grass clippings from building up and making a mess of our planes.  Please do a share by helping mow several times during the year.
You can mow anytime, but each Wed morning right after flying might be a good target time.   Call Bob if you have questions about the mowing.

Special Events Coming
On June 12 and 13 the Club will sponsor a two day fun-fly event. AMA fliers and anyone that wants to watch the flying are all invited, details to follow.  June 26th there will be a model rocket event at the ATV field behind the Sheriff Station on the Tillamook Airbase sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol cadets.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

When do we fly?

We fly anytime the weather is nice but more often you will find us flying on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday mornings from about 9:00 to noon.

Where is the airfield?
The airfield  is located 7 miles south of Tillamook
on a farm belonging to Norm Bennett who is very generously letting us use an area behind his barn for RC flying.   More

How many club members?
We have about a dozen active members with a diversity of talents, interests and flying experience. We like getting new members and invite you to join.  How to Join

How expensive is it?
You can spend any amount, from $20 on up, but a package with a plane and accessories costing between $150 and $400 is probably the price
range where you will get good performance and lasting value. Something like the GWS Slow Stick or Multiplex Easy Star are good first models because of their cost, durability, easy repair, good performance and stable flight.  A Spectrum DX6i radio system a good choice if you think you might want to buy additional planes some day. Brushless motors, Lithium batteries and Balancing chargers are good choices if you want the best performance.

How long does it take to learn to fly?

Most people can the learn basic flight maneuvers in a few flights but will greatly benefit by having an experienced copilot to help turn the plane away from hazards and
assist with the landings (planned and unplanned) for the first several flights (or more). You can continue to improve flying skills even after years of practice.

Can I teach myself to fly?
Yes, but
unless you practice with an RC version flight simulator before hand, your first several flights will more than likely be cut short by crashing into the ground, trees or buildings.  You can reduce the crash damage by flying over a large field of tall grass. You can't learn to fly an unflyable plane so it is important to make sure it has the proper balance and control surface movements (direction and amount) before each flight.  You can boost the odds of a successful first flight by getting an experienced pilot to adjust the trims at the beginning of your plane's first test flight and having him take over the controls when your flight path starts to wander a bit, well before it is totally out-of-control.
