Connecting to the Internet via Modem (Mac OS X)

To access the Internet with a modem, you must use PPP. PPP stands for Point-to-Point Protocol. It is a means of providing Internet connectivity, including access to e-mail, FTP, telnet, and the World Wide Web, via modem connections.

What You Will Need

  • Macintosh G3 or higher

  • Mac OS X

  • 128 MB of RAM

Configuring The Network Preferences

  • From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. The System Preferences window will appear.

  • Click on Network. The Network window will appear.

  • If the settings appear to be all grayed out, you will need to authorize yourself as an Administrator. To do so, click on the lock image at the bottom, left side of the Network window. An Authentication window will appear.

  • In the Authorization window, you will need to enter an Administrator username and password.

  • Note: If you are not an Administrator of the machine, you will need to have the Administrator of the machine unlock the Network preferences for you.

  • Once you have successfully unlocked the Network window, the window fields will become active and you can continue with the configuration.

  • In the Network preferences, under the Show dropdown menu, select Modem Port from the list.

  • Click on the TCP/IP tab. The TCP/IP settings will appear.

  • Under the Configure drop down menu select Using PPP.

  • The Domain Name Servers field should be left blank.

  • Under Search Domains input oregoncoast.com.

  • Click on the PPP tab. The PPP settings will appear.

  • Check Send PPP echo packets.

  • All other settings in the PPP options should be set at your own discretion.

  • Click the OK button.

  • Click on the Modem tab. The Modem settings will appear.

  • Under the Modem drop down menu, verify that the modem you have installed on your machine is selected. If your modem is not available in the list, reference the instructions that came with your modem as to how to install the proper modem drivers.

  • Under Sound, select On.

  • Under Dialing, select the type of dialing your modem supports.

  • Select Wait for dial tone before dialing.

  • Click on the Apply Now button in the lower right hand corner of the Network window.

Connecting to The WAVE

To make a PPP connection:

  • Launch the Internet Connect application found within your Applications directory.

  • If you have already configured your Network preferences for PPP, all relevant information should be displayed. Verify that your username is correct and enter your WAVE password.

  • Click on the Connect button.

The Internet Connect software will complete the connection. You should notice that the Connect button has changed to Disconnect, indicating that you are currently connected. A timer will also appear indicating the duration of your connection.

Disconnecting from The Wave

When you are finished working online, remember to disconnect.

  • To close your PPP connection, click on the Disconnect button in the Internet Connect application.

  • Note: If your connection is idle for 20 minutes, the system may automatically disconnect.
