Connecting to the Internet via Modem
(Mac OS X)

To access the Internet with a modem, you must use PPP. PPP stands for
Point-to-Point Protocol. It is a means of providing Internet connectivity,
including access to e-mail, FTP, telnet, and the World Wide Web, via modem
connections.
What You Will Need

Macintosh G3 or higher
-
Mac OS X
-
128 MB of RAM
Configuring The Network Preferences

From the menu, select . The System
Preferences window will appear.

Click on . The Network window will
appear.

If the settings appear to be all grayed out, you will
need to authorize yourself as an Administrator. To do so, click
on the lock image at the bottom, left side of the Network window.
An Authentication window will appear.

In the Authorization window,
you will need to enter an Administrator username and password.
Note: If you are not an Administrator of
the machine, you will need to have the Administrator of the
machine unlock the Network preferences for you.

Once you have successfully unlocked the Network window, the window
fields will become active and you can continue with the
configuration.

In the Network preferences,
under the dropdown menu, select from the list.

Click on the TCP/IP tab.
The TCP/IP settings will appear.

Under the drop down
menu select .
-
The Domain Name Servers field should be left blank.

Under Search Domains input oregoncoast.com.
-
Click on the PPP tab. The PPP
settings will appear.

Under Service Provider input The WAVE.

Under Telephone Number input the WAVE modem pool number appropriate for your location.

Leave the Alternate
Number field blank.

Under the Account Name input your WAVE account user name.

If you would like the computer to remember your WAVE
account password, input your password into the Password field and select Save Password.

Click on the PPP Options button. The PPP Options will appear.

Check Send PPP echo
packets.

Check Use TCP/IP header
compression.
-
All other settings in the PPP options should be set at
your own discretion.

Click the OK button.

Click on the Modem tab.
The Modem settings will appear.

Under the drop down
menu, verify that the modem you have installed on your machine
is selected. If your modem is not available in the list,
reference the instructions that came with your modem as to how
to install the proper modem drivers.

Under Sound, select On.

Under Dialing,
select the type of dialing your modem supports.

Select Wait for dial tone
before dialing.

Click on the Apply Now button in the lower right hand corner of the Network window.

Close the System
Preferences window.
You are now configured to dial in to the USC Network. Before gaining access to the internet, you must tell your computer to connect.
Connecting to The WAVE
To make a PPP connection:

Launch the Internet Connect application found within your Applications directory.

If you have already configured your Network preferences
for PPP, all relevant information should be displayed. Verify
that your username is correct and enter your WAVE
password.

Click on the Connect button.
The Internet Connect software will
complete the connection. You should notice that the Connect button has changed to Disconnect, indicating that you are
currently connected. A timer will also appear indicating the
duration of your connection.
Disconnecting from The Wave
When you are finished working online, remember to disconnect.

To close your PPP connection, click on the Disconnect button in the Internet Connect application.
Note: If your connection is idle for 20
minutes, the system may automatically disconnect.
