As winter comes on, there will be more storms that effect power in our area. Computers and associated items such as DSL routers, switches, and wireless hubs are complex electrical devices.
They are sensitive to power fluctuations that can occur when power is lost or when it comes back on. Even planned power outages can cause these potentially dangerous fluctuations.
The simplest way of protecting your computer and DSL equipment from the possible damage is to unplug the power cords when a storm is coming in, when you're leaving home for a time when a storm might come in, or when there's a planned outage.
Note: If there's no central plug-in location for all the equipment, just unplug the power cord at the back of the computer, the back of the DSL router, and the back of the wireless hub.
If all your computer and related equipment power cords are plugged into one surge protector or power strip, you can simply unplug the surge protector or power strip itself from the wall, and you're safe.
If the computer is on one power strip and your DSL router, wireless hub or switch is on another, be sure to unplug each power strip. |
